Ocean Infinity (OI) are a world-leading marine robotics company. Their new state-of-the-art, remote control and data centre, on the former Vosper Thornycroft shipyard, ensures this historic site continues to have a significant role to play in marine development. Sustainability is a key aspect of OI’s business, so it was important that our proposals reflected this. Low embodied energy materials, exposed ceilings, natural timber finishes and biophilic features were just some of the sustainably-focussed solutions employed. A double-height reception area with sculptural, spiral staircase provides an impactful entrance, whilst the control centre houses specialised units from which OI personnel command its robotic ships and underwater vehicles around the world. Our design also needed to provide an office workplace where creativity and innovation could flourish. The high-quality and distinctive space created helps foster a culture of efficiency, collaboration and communication, that is…
We were appointed to prepare a master plan as part of the Portsmouth City Centre Development Strategy that is part of the evidence base which supports the proposed approach to the regeneration of Portsmouth City Centre in the draft Local Plan Policy S1, now out for consultation (https://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/services/development-and-planning/planning-policy/the-local-plan/ ). The master plan is a high-level examination of the future potential of the city centre, based on current and rising trends in commerce, transport, climate and housing, to name just a few. It is based around more people living in the city centre, a greener & healthier environment, a changing shopping offer, a shift from building roads to creating streets, reconnecting the city centre with the its hinterland, a new business location, a greater sense of arrival, and expressing Portsmouth’s personality in the built environment. The area measures 60 hectares and…
We were appointed in 2020 to master plan a new urban extension to Weymouth for Lovell and ABRI. Part of a larger site which will include employment space and a new community school, our commission seeks to establish a new neighbourhood for the town with strong links with existing adjacent communities. Ultimately, 500 households will live here, most in houses on traditional streets with their own private gardens. A primary aim of the master plan will be to sit comfortably within the natural landscape bowl, with significant green space providing space for play and biodiversity. Street architecture will reference local context in a contemporary manner with the majority of dwellings in render or brick, coloured to offer a muted impression overall in this edge of countryside setting. The public realm will encourage walking and cycling to and from new and…

Baker Estates commissioned us to design a detailed master plan for 171 dwellings on a large site on the north-western fringe of Callington, a Cornish town 15 miles west of Plymouth. The regeneration and development of Poole’s waterfront will soon include this part-four/part-eleven storey apartment building on the Holes Bay Road close to the main railway station. Sea View Place, and the converted office building adjacent, is an example of the increasing move towards city centre living in Southampton. In the past 5+ years more people have seen the benefits and attractiveness of living close to the city’s key facilities including those offering jobs, transport or leisure. This in part relates to recent efforts to improve and enhance the city centre […]
Our second scheme with Dandara this brownfield site was home to Drayton Dairy but has been vacant for a number of years. The scheme is medium density and mainly comprises two storey houses with a single three storey apartment building overlooking the site entrance.
The building has been designed to simply and clearly perform its various functions, whilst announcing and advertising these to the outside world. The arrangement and distribution of main entrances can be understood through the pattern, size and repetition of canopy, doors and windows, especially on the ground floor. The ground floor will have windows providing an active frontage along much of the south elevation. The public and reception areas are similarly legible in their locations on the ground floor towards the main surface car park and Southampton Road.
