Project of the Year - Buildings at the Constructing Excellence London and South East Awards 2016. The project was delivered with Osborne Construction and included a feasibility study, detailed planning submission and full construction drawings package. The project forms part of the IESE framework Tranche 3 programme of work and was delivered for West Sussex County Council. The project provides a total of twelve new classrooms in a new independent block, a hall extension, and redevelopment and rebuilding of the administration facilities. We were appointed by Lakehouse Construction to prepare detailed technical proposals for RIBA stage 4 onwards including the delivery of the project for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Our work involved the coordination of design development of the planning design with a full design team. The new school will provide an additional 330 schools places in the Ham and Petersham area of Richmond. The proposed co-located Primary School and SEN facility is accommodated within a two-storey building which is located close to the grounds of historic Ham House on the banks of the River Thames. Varley Halls is a sensitive and contextual scheme located within the slopes of the South Downs in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The project comprised of a number of distinct phases reflecting the qualities of the development site. Each phase of the project is based on a character area which has generated a site specific building concept and typology. These include Hill House, Slope House and Woodland House.
Part of the Priority Schools Programme, and delivered with IESE Framework partner Osborne Construction, we developed initial designs produced by Hampshire County Council to create detailed contractor proposals. Our involvement was for stage 4 onwards including technical delivery and site monitoring. The project involved alterations and extensions to the school to provide six new classrooms and other teaching accommodation.
The concept behind the project is driven by the two distinct character areas of the site defined by the original villa at the front and contemporary classroom block at the rear. Observing a close hierarchy between the striking existing old building and the open and attractive nature of the suburban site provides a strong narrative to our design work.
